If you use WhatsApp on a computer and keep getting voice notes you can't play out loud, you need a way to turn them into text right where they arrive. This guide compares six options: one built into WhatsApp and five browser extensions for WhatsApp Web.
Updated November 7, 2026. Competitors' prices and store figures checked on November 3, 2026; Kaption's prices are its 2027 plans.
Kaption is our product; we list where others are better.
TL;DR: which one should you pick?
- Best overall on a computer: Kaption. Every account starts with 60 days of Business, unlimited, and it adds summaries, search inside transcripts and translation in the same extension. After that, Free continues with limits on voice notes, transcribed on your device.
- Best for audio that never leaves your device: WhatsApp's own transcripts on your phone, which are generated on the device. On a computer, Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI claims it processes audio in your browser.
- Best if you only want a button and nothing else: WA Audio & Voice Message to Text (WASBB) or Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI.
- Best if you already sell with Pragmaz: its TranscriptAI feature, which bundles transcription and translation.
- Best for voice notes in a language you don't speak: WA Web Translate (WADesk), which translates voice messages for free, or Kaption if you also want the plain transcript.
How do the six options compare?
The table uses each Chrome Web Store listing and each vendor's pricing page as of Nov 3, 2026. Store user counts are rounded by the store.
| Tool | Free plan | What it does best | Price (as of Nov 3, 2026) | Chrome store users / rating | Best for |
|---|
| Kaption | Yes: unlimited for 60 days, then on your device with limits | Transcripts plus summaries, search and translation | Free; Lifetime local AI US$99 once; Pro US$11.99/mo (US$7.99/mo yearly) | About 50,000 users; 4.8 from 5.5K ratings | People who get a lot of voice notes at work |
| WhatsApp built-in transcripts | Yes, built in | On-device transcripts, nothing to install | Free | Not an extension | Reading voice notes on your phone |
| Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI | No pricing on the listing | Automatic transcript under each voice note | Not published | 7,000; 4.9 from 304 ratings | A zero-click transcriber, claimed in-browser |
| WASBB Audio to Text | No pricing on the listing | Automatic or one-click, searchable transcripts | Not published | 5,000; 4.5 from 952 ratings | A single-purpose transcription button |
| Pragmaz (TranscriptAI) | Free tools, but TranscriptAI is paid | Transcription and translation inside a sales suite | TranscriptAI add-on R$7.99/mo; plans from R$120.99/mo | 100,000; 4.2 from 3.6K ratings | Brazilian sellers already on Pragmaz |
| WA Web Translate (WADesk) | Yes, the extension is free | Translating voice messages and chats | Free | 9,000; 4.9 from 250 ratings | Voice notes in another language |
If you want the step-by-step setup instead of a comparison, our guide on how to transcribe WhatsApp voice notes on your computer walks through it.
1. Kaption: what do you get for free?
Every account starts with 60 days of Business, unlimited, with no card. After that, Free continues with limits on voice notes, transcribed on your device. Kaption is a browser extension for WhatsApp Web in Chrome and Edge, plus a desktop app for Mac (Apple silicon) and Windows 10/11. It adds a transcribe button to every voice note, sent or received, and the text appears under the message in the language it was recorded in, across dozens of languages. You can also turn on auto-transcribe and search inside your transcripts later.
What it does well:
- Transcripts in the chat, not in a separate tab or upload page.
- Summaries of long voice notes and whole chats, so you can tell if a five-minute note is worth reading in full. Summaries are included in your first 60 days; after that they are unlimited on Pro and Business.
- Live translation in 36 languages, so you can transcribe a note and then translate the text.
- Smart transcription on Pro, which learns the names and brands you use.
- Kaption Transcriber for iPhone and Android, included with Pro, if you also want transcripts on the phone.
- Lifetime local AI: one payment (US$99, after 30 days free) for unlimited transcripts and translation on your computer, with smaller models and no cloud.
Limits:
- On Pro and Business, Turbo transcription runs in Kaption's cloud. What leaves your computer is only the audio you choose to transcribe, without your name, number or contacts; it is discarded once the text comes back and is never used to train AI models. Free (with limits) and Lifetime local AI transcribe on your computer, with smaller models; quality and speed depend on the computer.
- After your first 60 days, Free has limits on voice notes.
- Chrome and Edge only. There is no Firefox or Safari extension, and no app for Linux or Intel Macs.
- Like any transcriber, it struggles with background noise, crosstalk and unusual names.
Price: Free after your first 60 days; Lifetime local AI US$99 once; Pro US$11.99 a month (US$9.99 a month billed every 3 months, US$7.99 billed yearly); Business US$19.99 a month with 2 WhatsApp numbers. See pricing.
Store figures: about 50,000 users, rated 4.8 from 5.5K ratings on the Chrome Web Store.

2. WhatsApp's built-in transcripts: do they work on a computer?
WhatsApp documents its voice message transcripts for the Android and iPhone apps; we found no public source either way for WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop, so check the settings on your own version. WhatsApp launched transcripts on November 21, 2024.
What it does well:
- It's free and built in, with nothing to install.
- Transcripts are generated on your device. WhatsApp's announcement says "no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages." On privacy, this matches Kaption's on-device Free and Lifetime local AI and beats its cloud plans.
Limits:
Price: free.
Store figures: not applicable; it isn't an extension.
3. Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI: is the in-browser claim worth it?
It's worth a look if keeping audio off servers matters most to you, because its listing says transcription happens in your browser and messages are never collected or stored. That's the listing's claim; we haven't verified it independently.
What it does well:
- Fully automatic: the transcript appears below each voice note with no click.
- A very high rating: 4.9 from 304 ratings.
Limits:
- Transcription only: no translation, summaries, reminders or export.
- The listing shows no pricing and no website, so you can't check plans or limits in advance.
- A 3-star review from October 1, 2026 says it is "sometimes not working."
Price: not published on the listing as of Nov 3, 2026.
Store figures: 7,000 users, 4.9 from 304 ratings, last updated October 26, 2026.
4. WASBB Audio to Text: what does a single-purpose transcriber give you?
WA Audio & Voice Message to Text by WASBB.COM gives you an "audio to text" button for WhatsApp Web and little else, which is the point. It transcribes automatically or with one click, handles several languages, and makes transcripts searchable.
What it does well:
- Simple: one job, done in the chat.
- The listing says it keeps your transcriptions local to your browser. Note that this is about storage; the listing doesn't say where the audio is processed.
Limits:
- No translation in this extension. WASBB publishes its translator and privacy tools as separate extensions, so a full setup means installing several.
- No summaries.
- No prices on the listing or on the wasbb.com home page.
Price: not published as of Nov 3, 2026.
Store figures: 5,000 users, 4.5 from 952 ratings, last updated August 1, 2026.
5. Pragmaz TranscriptAI: when does it make sense?
It makes sense if you already run your sales on Pragmaz, because TranscriptAI is part of a larger paid suite rather than a standalone transcriber. Pragmaz describes TranscriptAI as transcription, translation and voice.
What it does well:
- Transcription and translation in the same tool you may already use for a Kanban CRM, scheduled statuses and chat export.
- Pragmaz's free tools need no sign-up, per its listing.
Limits:
- Transcription isn't in the free tools. Pragmaz's pricing page lists TranscriptAI as an R$7.99/month add-on and also says its paid plans include it, so read the page before you buy.
- Paid plans are priced in Brazilian reais and start at R$151.24 a month, or R$120.99 a month on annual billing.
- Its Chrome Web Store privacy panel says it handles personally identifiable information.
Price: TranscriptAI add-on R$7.99 a month; Basic plan R$151.24 a month (R$120.99 on annual), as of Nov 3, 2026.
Store figures: 100,000 users, 4.2 from 3.6K ratings, last updated November 2, 2026.
If you're weighing the whole suite, see our Pragmaz alternative page.
6. WA Web Translate (WADesk): can a translator handle voice notes?
Yes, in its own way: the listing advertises "real-time voice translate for WhatsApp voice messages," which means it translates what was said rather than presenting itself as a plain transcriber. It's free.
What it does well:
- The extension is free, and the listing says it supports 200+ languages.
- You can choose Google, DeepL or AI engines, set languages per chat, or use auto-detect.
Limits:
- It isn't described as producing plain transcripts in the original language, which is what you need for notes in your own language.
- Translation goes through Google, DeepL or AI engines, so your text is processed on their servers.
- The extension leads into WADesk, a separate multi-account CRM with its own plans.
Price: free as of Nov 3, 2026.
Store figures: 9,000 users, 4.9 from 250 ratings, last updated October 12, 2026.
Which one should you choose?
Pick based on the one thing you can't give up:
- Volume and extra tools: Kaption, because unlimited transcription (60 days free, then Lifetime local AI once or Pro from US$7.99 a month billed yearly) comes with summaries, search and translation in one extension.
- Privacy above everything: WhatsApp's own transcripts on the phone, or an extension that claims in-browser processing. Kaption Free and Lifetime local AI also transcribe on the computer itself.
- Minimal footprint: WASBB or Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI.
- Foreign-language notes: WA Web Translate for free translation, or Kaption to get the transcript first and then translate it.
- A sales suite: Pragmaz.
If you're moving from another transcriber, our switching guide for transcription extensions explains how to avoid two extensions adding buttons to the same voice note. You can also try the free voice note to text tool, or see the full comparison of WhatsApp Web tools.
When isn't Kaption the right pick?
Kaption isn't the right pick in these cases:
- You need the best quality with audio processed only on your device. Kaption's on-device transcription (Free with limits, or Lifetime local AI) uses smaller models; its best quality is on the cloud plans. WhatsApp's phone transcripts are generated on the device, and Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI claims in-browser processing.
- You use Firefox, Safari, Linux or an Intel Mac. Kaption runs in Chrome and Edge and as a desktop app for Apple silicon Macs and Windows 10/11.
- You send mass messages or campaigns. Kaption deliberately doesn't do this, and its terms forbid bulk or unsolicited messaging. Tools like Pragmaz or WA Web Plus offer broadcasts.
- You want a CRM. Kaption isn't one. Pragmaz has a Kanban CRM.
- You need lots of free translation. After your first 60 days, Kaption Free doesn't include translation; WA Web Translate is free.
FAQ
Can I transcribe WhatsApp voice notes on a PC for free?
Yes. Every Kaption account starts with 60 days of Business, unlimited, in WhatsApp Web in Chrome or Edge, with no card; after that, Free continues with limits on voice notes, transcribed on your device. WA Web Translate is also free, but it translates voice messages rather than producing plain transcripts.
Does WhatsApp Web have its own transcription?
WhatsApp documents its transcripts for the Android and iPhone apps. We found no public source either way for WhatsApp Web or Desktop, so check the settings on your version. If it isn't there, an extension adds a transcript to each voice note.
Which option is the most private?
WhatsApp's phone transcripts are generated on your device, which makes them the most private option we found sources for. Among extensions, Transcribe WhatsApp Audio with AI claims in-browser processing (not independently verified). Kaption Free and Lifetime local AI transcribe on your computer; on the cloud plans, Kaption sends only the audio you transcribe, without your name or number, and discards it once the text is back.
Does Kaption work with WhatsApp Business?
Yes. Kaption works with personal and WhatsApp Business accounts in WhatsApp Web and in the desktop app. Free works the same on both: on your device, with limits after your first 60 days. Pro and Business are unlimited.
Can I search old voice note transcripts?
With Kaption, yes: you can search inside your transcripts. WASBB's listing also describes its transcripts as searchable.
What about voice notes in another language?
Transcribe the note first, then translate it. Kaption does both in the same chat, with live translation in 36 languages (unlimited on Lifetime local AI, Pro and Business). WA Web Translate translates voice messages for free.
Do these extensions work on Firefox or Safari?
Kaption doesn't: it runs in Chrome and Edge. The other extensions in this guide are listed on the Chrome Web Store.
How accurate are the transcripts?
It depends on the recording. Background noise, crosstalk and unusual names cause most errors with any tool. Kaption Pro's smart transcription learns names and brands; when a number or a name really matters, play that part of the audio to check.
