No screen-recording permission
Kaption takes the other person's voice from WhatsApp's own call playback and yours from the microphone WhatsApp already uses. Nothing else on your screen or computer is captured.

WhatsApp doesn't record calls
WhatsApp has no record button on any device. The usual workaround is a screen recorder: it needs screen-recording permission, captures whatever is on your screen, and leaves you with a video file and no transcript. Kaption records the call's own audio instead, inside the app where the call happens.
How it works

Choose how each number records
In Settings › Call recordings, pick Every call, Only when I press Record, or Off, separately for each WhatsApp number. A number that has not chosen yet starts recording, and the bar asks: Always, Only this call, or Don't record. "Don't record" throws that recording away.

Talk as usual
A red bar shows the running time and a Stop button. The first time, it reminds you to tell everyone on the call. Your side follows WhatsApp's mute.

Find the file in Downloads
When the call ends, the recording is saved to Downloads › Kaption Call Recordings, named after the contact and the time. It is a standard .m4a audio file with both sides, and it plays anywhere.

Read the transcript
Each side is transcribed on its own, so every line shows who spoke. The Call recordings screen lets you play, search and delete recordings and their transcripts.

Transcripts on your Mac
On a Mac with macOS 26, transcripts can run on the computer with Apple's speech recognition, so the audio stays on your Mac. Kaption Cloud is the other option.
Transcripts on Windows
On Windows, call transcripts run in Kaption Cloud. Cloud transcription depends on your plan.
Transcribe when you want
Automatic transcripts are off until you turn them on. You can transcribe any single recording by hand, and silent sides are skipped.
Search every call
Search across contact names and transcripts. The search runs on your computer.
Only WhatsApp calls
Kaption records WhatsApp calls made in the Kaption app. It does not record phone calls, other apps, or calls in the browser extension.
Tell everyone on the call
Recording laws differ by country and state, and many places require everyone on the call to agree. Kaption reminds you the first time you record. Ask first, every time.
Questions
Can the Kaption Chrome extension record calls?
No. Call recording is only in the Kaption desktop app for Mac and Windows. The browser extension never records calls.
Does it record video?
Kaption records the audio of WhatsApp voice and video calls. The picture is not recorded.
Where are my recordings saved?
In your Downloads folder, inside Kaption Call Recordings. Each file is named after the contact and the time of the call and never overwrites an older one.
Does the other person get a notice?
Kaption does not send the other person anything. That is why it reminds you to tell them, and why you should ask before you record.
Which computers does it work on?
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), and Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, where the app is an early beta. Intel Macs and Linux are not supported.
Can I stop recording every call?
Yes. In Settings › Call recordings choose Only when I press Record, or Off, for each number. You can also press Stop during any call.
