Characters as you see them
An emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts as one character, even when it is several code points underneath.
Paste a message, a profile name or an About line. The counter shows characters, words and emoji as you type, and how much room is left under each limit WhatsApp or Meta publishes.
WhatsApp’s help pages give 25 characters for your profile name and an emoji plus 50 characters for your About. For businesses on the WhatsApp Cloud API, Meta allows 4,096 characters in a text message and 1,024 in a media caption.
Characters are counted as you see them: an emoji counts once.

Words are counted with your browser’s word breaker, so Chinese and Japanese text is counted by word, not by space.
Each limit links to the WhatsApp or Meta page that states it. Numbers we could not find in an official source are left out.

Left out on purpose: the 65,536-character message limit, the 700-character text status and the 139-character About that other counters list. WhatsApp and Meta don’t publish them, and WhatsApp’s help page now gives 50 characters for About.
Questions
WhatsApp doesn’t publish one for chats in the app, so the counter doesn’t guess. Very long messages are cut into a “Read more” preview in the chat.
Many sites still quote 139 characters. WhatsApp’s current help page says you can choose an emoji and add up to 50 characters of text, so the counter uses that.
Here they do, because that is how they look. Some systems count an emoji as two or more, so leave a little room when you are close to a limit.
No. The counter runs in your browser. Nothing you paste leaves this page.
