# WhatsApp character counter

> Count characters, words and emoji in a WhatsApp message and check it against WhatsApp's published limits for your name, About and Business API messages.

The counter runs in the visitor's browser; nothing pasted there is uploaded. Characters are counted as people see them (an emoji, flag or accented letter counts once). Words are counted with the browser's word breaker, so Chinese and Japanese are counted by word.

## How many characters can you use on WhatsApp?

Only limits with a first-party source are listed:

Left out on purpose: the 65,536-character message limit, the 700-character text status and the 139-character About that other counters list. WhatsApp and Meta don't publish them, and WhatsApp's help page now gives 50 characters for About.
